DECORATION DAY

Here bring your purple and gold, 
Glory of color and scent! 

Scarlet of tulips bold, 

Buds blue as the firmament. 

Hushed is the sound of the fife 

And the bugle piping clear; 

The vivid and delicate life 

In the soul of the youthful year. 

We bring to the quiet dead 

A gentle and tempered grief; 

O'er the mounds so mute we shed 

The beauty of blossom and leaf. 

Rich fires of the gardens and meads, 

We kindle these hearts above! 

What splendor shall match their deeds? 

What sweetness can match our love? 

The History Of The Decoration Day

General John A Logan, commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, in 1868 designated the thirtieth day of May as the day on which the graves of dead Union soldiers should be decorated, and this date is now universally observed throughout the Northern states.

The Doll House Project

What kindergarten or school is complete without a doll house? Nothing gives more joy to the child than making furniture, and rugs, papering, cutting and framing pictures, and doing anything that grown ups would do for a home. 
Secure two orange boxes for the house. place one on the other lengthwise, making the house two stories high, with four rooms. If a larger house is wanted, place another box at the end for an ell which can be used for the dining room and kitchen. The two lower rooms in the house are the reception room, and parlor. One upper room is furnished for a bed room. Place a cardboard partition through one room, and use half for hall the other half for bath room.

Instead of painting the house, brown laundry paper may be effectively used for covering the outside. Real wall paper may be used for the inside walls. Suit boxes bent in the middle length-wise, and inverted may be used for the roof. One of the boys in the manual training department could make the stairway, or cardboard might be bent into shape for steps. And last but not least, this lovely house can be lighted by electricity, furnished by two toy batteries. One of the older boys in the school can wire the house, and connect the batteries or the teacher might teach understand how to do that .Use miniature bulbs. Of course the house can not be lighted for any length of time, but what a joy it is to the children to have the house lighted for a few minutes at the time.
